Kurtz, Braun Leave Lime Rock Park with Top-10 Finish After Condensed SprintX Races
Lakeville, Conn (May 29, 2018) — Two Monday races at Lime Rock Park gave way to a wildcard hand for the drivers of the No. 04 CrowdStrike/GMG Racing Audi R8 LMS GT4, George Kurtz and Colin Braun. The notoriously fast road course in Connecticut was host to the Pirelli World Challenge (PWC) SprintX events, sixty-minute races with a driver change midway through. Both Kurtz and Braun fought near the front of the pack of aggressive sports cars through multiple laps under caution, resulting in a top-10 finish in the Memorial Day races.
Both races had a fair amount of caution flags due to competitors’ cars being wrecked on track, meaning there was a mad dash for the front of the pack once the green flag signaled it was clear to race. In the first SprintX event of the day, Kurtz drove the first half, followed by Braun. The No. 04 Audi, prepared by Global Motorsports Group (GMG Racing), was hit just after the start of the race, but the driver duo was able to regain 12 positions before the end, finishing 11th in the GTS-X Pro-Am class.
Early in the day’s second race, there was a heavy wreck between two competitors. Nearly all of the first half of the race was under caution while the track was cleaned up. When the green flag finally waved, a battle for first was underway and Braun was right in the mix. He stayed within a slim margin of the two race leaders while allowing them room to attempt to overtake each other, reaching as high as second place before it was time for the driver change. Kurtz then took over the car and did well to stay within the top six drivers until he sustained a hard hit and spun off track. A quick recovery meant he was back on his way, though with a damaged car he was only able to claim ninth place making it another a top-10 finish in his class.
“Lime Rock is known for very intense racing, but this weekend we were right in the mix,” said Kurtz. “I dealt with some damage to the car in both races but was able to stay competitive with multiple car classes nonetheless. Colin did his best to get the lead for the CrowdStrike car, and the GMG Racing team did a great job on this Audi!”
Braun was still feeling the energy of the battle for a podium position after the second race. “What an eventful weekend!” he said. “We showed good speed and never gave up! The guys did a superb job keeping us in the game and George did a great job in the car. Unfortunately, George was the victim of some contact in both races which took us out of contention. We will keep working hard and learning every single event! Can’t wait for Portland!”
Throughout this four-day event, CrowdStrike hosted corporate guests from neighboring regions to enjoy the race weekend. Attendees from Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut shared the excitement of motorsports competition with Kurtz, the CEO and co-founder of CrowdStrike, while nurturing valuable business connections amongst each other.
The next race for Kurtz and the CrowdStrike Audi is at Road America in Wisconsin from June 22 through 24.
